    Hi,

Currently the only way I have found to capture live footage with FCP is to set the capture settings to “Uncontrolled Device” and use the “Capture Now” function. What I would like to do though is to use our external time code generator to sync FCP with our other AV device’s.

Is this possible with FCP and what investments would we have to make? Alternatively is there other software (Adobe On Location perhaps?) that do offer this option?

    Cheers,
    Jon

It depends on the codec you want to capture to, and how you’ve got the TC available.

If you have a firewire signal, you can capture without FCP (perhaps even using QT pro) and preserve the TC inside the firewire stream.

If not, i’ve written a generic capture app. that ‘should’ be able to capture anyting if the proper VDIG is there. But timecode comes from either a preset, system clock or an LTC signal. (And i forgot if i have implemented the latter, but that would be easy.)
Contact me direct if you want to toy with it.

It is not a problem to modify the TC of a captured clip afterwards, but i don’t know how accurate you need it to be.

Thanks for your help. It never occurred to me that QT pro could do that directly.

Yes last time we did it we connected directly to an ISO tape deck via firewire so this is a good solution.

So we could capture QT DVPAL via Firewire in QuickTime Pro and that would preserve the original timecode?

    Many thanks,
    Jon

    Probably…
    Just try it.
If not, ask me for a copy of my app, that will definitly work this way.
