Capturing D5 1280×720 24fps – Easy Setup Options & Formats?
Hey Gang,
So today I will be getting a D5 tape along with a Rental Deck to ingest approx. 1 minute of footage which will be brought into After Effects for treatment.
My question is what are my options for Capturing – what can I set my Easy Setup to exactly…We were going to try to capture at 10 bit, 8 bit, and Pro Res (HQ) because we do have a RAID fibre connection but are not sure if it is fast enough. because its only 1 minute of footage storage is not an issue at all.
Another question is whether or not the timecode error or drop frames error will definitely pop up if we try to capture at 10 bit and the disk speed is too slow.
What if any other things do i need to be aware of in taking on this endeavor.

Without your specs, there’s really no way for use to even estimate the probability of drop frames. What Raid setup are you using, and how full is it? I’ve never had the Easy setups work great for me when capturing or laying back D5. First off, you’ll have to configure the deck to 720 24p with is done by hitting setup, and then going into the system menu.
I usually captured and laidback at 1080i 29.97, and set the Deck Control (in FCP) to the Panasonic 59.94 setting, and would layback a test pattern to see how much I needed to adjust my offset. Typically only a frame or to, and sometimes not at all. It was never extremely consistent in my experience.

I understand some of your response
the raid we have is a XRaid 2 controllers / 14 drives / at least 512mb ram each – so it should b e ok for 10 bit uncompressed.
Sorry i have never captured D5 and the specs on my original post in terms of resolution and frame rate are all i have at this point…
Any other advice or explanations would be much appreciated.

A 14 way stripe should be fine for 10 bit uncompressed as long as it isn’t too full. If it’s more than 80% full, you could run into trouble. Did you hire an engineer or have somebody there who has used a D5 deck before. It’s not an extremely complicated deck, but it is a multiformat deck that will cause you trouble if you set it up incorrectly.

so no engineer but we are going to have the rental place set the deck to the rate the tape is…my question is still what setings should i be capturing this footage as – easy setup??

You can’t capture 720p 24fps from a D5. There’s no such format. 720p is always 60fps. Now you could have footage that was originally shot at 24, but in order to capture 24 it is very complicated. Better to convert it after capturing.

Hmm maybe the producer is just wrong about that…so you are saying on a D5 the only 720 format is 60 fps?

That’s correct. Now it could have been originally shot on film or 24p video, but the tape will always be 60p. With DVCProHD you can remove the extra frames and bring it back to 24p automatically during capture. But with D5 & HDCam it’s much more complicated to do that.
