Problem with QT conversion letterboxing- time sensitive!
Posted by Stu Siegal on March 6, 2009 at 5:56 pmI’m outputting an hdv timeline as 4:3 using QT conversion, checking the preserve aspect ratio using letterbox, and still getting a stretched version. This seems like a no brainer, but what am I missing?

March 6, 2009 at 6:20 pmHDV is 16:9
If you want 4:3, you either crop or letterbox, or you have a squashed image. What am i missing here, or what are you trying to do?

March 6, 2009 at 6:34 pmI need to take a 16:9 movie and export it as 4:3 letterboxed. This way, when it goes up on youtube, the client can add links in the lower black box. They can live with the combo letterbox pillarbox.
I would just upload a qt output from compressor using brian gary’s preset, but I am getting a white line along the right side pillarbox that I can’t figure out how to get rid of when I use his preset. For some reason, I don’t get it when coming out of qt conversion, but now I can’t get qt conversion to letterbox!
Example of the white line:

If I could resolve the white line coming out of compressor, I would forget about the qt conversion problem.
Help appreciated, clock is ticking.

March 6, 2009 at 6:51 pmProcess your clip trough AE.
This way you can set an optimum output res for Youtube, as well as letterbox, crop a line or two on the vertical part, and deinterlace.Bouke

March 6, 2009 at 7:32 pmYes, AE would be ideal, but because I don’t use it much, I just built a preset in Compressor from scratch, as opposed to Brian’s preset, and got the encode out in time. Still, the original problem puzzles me- why wouldn’t qt conversion apply the letterbox?
