Sony M25U analog outs dark…..Bob Z or someone have an idea?
I have the Sony M25U HDV deck with composite and component outputs.
both of them are outputting too dark.
enough that a bars pluge is being crushed into black.
I have verified it with my other DV deck which is not
having this problem.I have set the output for both “Betacam” & “SMPTE” neither
make a difference.I do own the service manual for this deck but not sure where to begin.
does anyone here know how to adjust the color correction of this
deck in the service menu so I can boost the blacks to proper level outputs?I realize I can take it in for service, but I’d like to just get
it done here quickly if possible as it seems like a rather simple
adjustment to be made (I’ve tweaked my PVM monitors in service mode for example) -

Might be a menu option for setup on output. that is, analog output at 7.5 ire. I know some of these little Sony decks just offered the Japanese standard of black at 0 (DSR-40, DSR-20). Other decks offer an option through the menu. If your deck has no menu option, I would say it only offers analog black at 0.
For a point of reference, see what options you have on your other deck, which is?

Dino is correct. Some Sony DV VTR’s have the ability to change the “setup level” from 0IRE to 7.5 IRE. I don’t know all the menu’s on the HVR-M25U, but without the manual, no one is going to be able to help you.
Ultimately, without monitoring the signal on a waveform monitor, so see if your blacks are at 0 IRE or 7.5 IRE (or somewhere else !), it will be tough to say “it’s dark because of this and that”. That is why waveform monitors exist.

I’ve confirmed the setup is out of whack (measured with scopes btw)
when downconverting is turned on over component it gets even darker.
the 0 and 7.5 setup is what I thought “SMPTE” and “BETA” levels mean.

HD or SD? SD I assume if we are talking about setup.
You can add setup with a Kona. Also check to see if you can change the component color space in the deck. Some accept both Beta compenent or SMPTE and you need to decide/match your output to those specs. Setup and color space are different things.

yeah there is clearly something that needs adjustment in the
service menu. it’s so cryptic. I’ll probably just wait until
my service guy can get it done in a day.
