Working with 16:9 footage for 4:3 delivery
I ‘ve been working with HDV 1080i footage, which when imported into FCP, reads to be 1440×1080.
However, when I export the sequence it comes out as 1920×1080.
I need to eventually make 400×300 .flv files of these projects, so they always end up distorted and *smushed.*
I’m sure there is something very simple that I am doing wrong either with the Easy Setup or with the sequence presets. I set everything up with the HDV 1080i60 presets…

However, when I export the sequence it comes out as 1920×1080. “This is correct. Pretty much all HD cameras shoot in anamorphic format, hence the 1440×1080.

Telestream’s Episode Pro can chop off the edges of a 16:9 file to make a 4:3 Flash file. If you don’t have that, since you’re going to Flash, you can simply create an 8bit SD timeline, drop your HD timeline into that and adjust the aspect ratio so it’s a good square image. then export that timeline as a self contained movie and encode your flash file from that.
Usually I would not recommend dropping the HD timeline into an SD timeline, but since you’re going to Flash, this should work out ok. You might need to apply the Shift Field filter in the SD timeline, but again, since you’re going to Flash, it might not be necessary.
