I’m looking into purchasing a Bolex 16mm film camera and was wondering what the best method would be for obtaining the raw footage and then editing and color correcting within Final Cut Studio. Basically I am wondering what the best way would be for me to get a highly uncompressed digitized copy from the lab so that I can edit and color correct everything in FCP without losing bit depth. I’ve looked into a few labs and they advertise using 3CCD cameras to digitize the film and I really don’t see the point if you shoot on film (which is entirely uncompressed) why you would pay to have it downgraded. Does anyone know the best way to go about doing this?

That is a very low rent way of doing it. You need to find a professional TELECINE house…a place that has a SPIRIT or RANK CINTEL film tranfer machine. Super8mm in LA has one…and is decently priced. But then I can also mention a dozen more. But you need to look in the major film markets for the proper telecine device.

A very cool lab is Bono Film & Video in near Wash. DC. What I like about them is that they will telecine direct to your hard drive to any Quicktime codec you choose. Or, you can give them a deposit and they’ll send the files on one of their own hard drives. You can find them at https://www.bonofilm.com/home.asp.
