  offline online for animation project

  hi, i’m new here, only familiar with the basics of FCP. i’m finishing up an animation project for which i need to do a little basic editing.
  my output quicktime files from the animation software (toon boom studio so originally vector based) are in “animation” 2048X1536, my good old quad G5 seems to have trouble dealing with them. i’m not too sure how to setup FCP and its sequence settings.. i tried film academy with quicktime compressor set to animation.
  anyway, i always need to render and even then, the playback is tough. so i thought to edit offline.
  but while basically understanding the concept of course, i’m not really understanding how to achieve it successfully.
  of course, i could simply without using media manager, make smaller copies of my big files. then make my sequence go offline and then try and reconnect with the bigger files.. but then my sequence would be in the wrong setting and i’m not sure it that’s the best to achieve what i need. if anyway can help me out that would be great. thx – pierre

  ps: at the end i will need to export from FCP a file both in 2048×1536 and in a smaller pal standard size.

  First off, animation is not an editing codec. It’s primarily used to move files between platforms with alpha channels.

  Second, you don’t say what kind of drive array you’re using, but you’ll need a very big, fast array to work with any flavor of uncompressed 2k. Even ProRes will require a rather large, fast array.

  If it were me, I’d work up a workflow involving 2k files in ProRes, and offline proxies at a smaller size (you mention SD PAL, so that would be a logical choice) in either ProRes or DV.

  ok ok thanks, it’s a little hard for me to understand everything..
  i’d be happy to export from my animation software to a different format than animation if you say that’s not well suited for editing, but which one should i choose then? i simply noticed that that one didn’t alter too much the beauty of the vector lines.
  then, my hard drive is very simple a 7200 rpm 1000 gigs, perhaps that’s not ideal again..
  most importantly, i don’t understand how to organize the workflow to do offline editing and then “transfer” it to online. thanks again – pierre

  A single 1TB drive is completely inadequate for this project. You need a large, fast array that can deliver speeds of over 200MB/sec.

  And how are you monitoring? to monitor 2k to a broadcast monitor you need a capture card like the Kona 3 or Multibridge.

  Why do you need 2k files? Are you delivering for a film transfer? If so, then you should speak to your lab about having them do the edit for you.
