  • NAS with FCP ? a good solution ?

    Hi everyone !

I’m looking for an affordable way of creating an extendable RAID(5 ?) video for FCP to use with my Macbook Pro (knowing that my express card slot is allready taken).

The solution of creating a SAN is not possible for me (too expensive) so I turned to a NAS solution (I’ll be the only one to access the NAS, so no problem with this). The other idea with the NAS was to put the drives further from my desk (other room) because of the noisy fans (I’m not a big fan of fans haha)

My idea is to buy a NAS solution like Netgear’s like this one : https://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/ReadyNASPro/RNDP6310.aspx
in which I’ll be able to add some more disk later.

Any alternative idea ? Will it work ? (will it blend haha)
Is this NAS is a good one ?

Thank you for reading this question and thank you even more if you are answering to it !

PS : sorry for the stupid jokes …
PPS : not sure if this is the right place to post, but this is concerning FCP so …

Consumer NAS systems are dirt slow. I mean really slow, like 5 MB/s. Don’t believe the 1gb crap. They just use that to decieve customers. The puny processors can’t handle anything close to 1gb. And if they support Apple file-sharing (AFP), which is rare, it will probably be even slower.

The only known way to do non-SAN file sharing with FCP and have it work well is to use an Intel Mac as a server and use a high-end switch and nic cards from Small-Tree.

Anyway… it’s silly to use a NAS for one system. Beyond silly. Ridiculously silly. Don’t do it. If you want to get rid of noisy fans, buy a CAT-5 extender for monitor & USB. Then you can put not just your drives in another room but your noisy computer as well.

I can set you up with a SATA solution with more storage than that for the same money. Much faster xfer rates. email me if your interested. John
