FCP 3 is freezing
Hello,
My G4 with OS X 10.5.6 and FCP 3 is having some problems I’ve never faced. I try to open a file in the viewer and I can’t get it to play. I get the spinning beachball of death and can hear broken audio, but the picture does not move. If I open the same movie file in Quicktime, it plays just fine. I tried to trash my preferences and that didn’t work. I also tried to re-install FCP 3, but that didn’t work either.
Any thoughts?

If you are using OS X 10.5.6 then perhaps you might need to upgrade to a version of FCP that is compatible with your OS.

It used to work on this version of the OS. I don’t know why it just stopped. I just repaired disc permissions, but that didn’t help either

For me sounds like a miracle: FC 3 in a G4 with Leopard.
Use DiskWarrior or TechTools to repair your directories.

I think I must have another problem. I just tried to open Word and was told I don’t have enough memory or disk space to run work. I have plenty of disk space. What could be happening? Could I have a virus? I didn’t think Macs got viruses.

I’m actually shocked that FCP 3 even works with 10.5. The only thing I can think of is the Quicktime Version is too new for FCP 3. There must be something you have just installed or changed about the system that would cause FCP to stop working.
Or the installation of the software is now corrupt which can happen. My FCP 6 got to the point late last year where my Text tool would crash the software every time I tried to use it. No clue why, so I wiped everything clean and did a fresh install of the entire computer over the holidays.

I think I’m going to revert to my old OS and take a bunch of stuff off this Mac and make it an edit only station. I’ll probably wipe the drives and reload FCP 3 and not much else and use this to edit only. I have another Mac that I can use for my day to day stuff, but keep this one for video editing only. Maybe that will prevent other problems.
