  • Map to arial shot

I am doing a 3D camera move, starting on a map of an area of about 15 miles by 18 miles, ending on an area of about 25 sqare blocks. It also needs to disolve to an arial shot of the same area.

As the camera moves towards the map, the map scales up. Otherwise, the area shown in the ending becomes too small in comparison to the camera.

But, after the scale-up, the render time shoots up from 8-9 seconds a frame to 4 minutes a frame.

I would like to reduce the render time and welcome any suggestions for matching the arial shot.

    Thanks

Instead of scaling, try the Camera Zoom parameter.

Thanks. But, zooming will not work. The camera begins at a location comparable to an airliner then comes down to the altitude of a low flying helicoptor. We start on a map view then come down to the helicopter view, then we dissolve to the arial.

My problem is navigating at the helicoptor level, because we are so close to the target object, the map, we are so close that the smallest of position changes made to the camera has the effect of moving it a couple of blocks.

So, I need the map to get big, really big. My latest is scaling the map way the hell up to 13,000 x 13,000 in Illustrator. I get a faster render speed than I did when I scaled up in after effects. But, it is still too slow and getting the animation and the arial footage to match is tedious.

    Has anyone tried this technique.

Well, I have to start by saying “No” I’ve never tried anything like this =)

But I do have a couple of ideas.

Since you mention Illustrator, are you setting the imported layer to Continously Rasterize? Does changing the state of that toggle affect render time?

And also, you could try making several instances of the map at the same ‘scale’ but cropped tighter. Then when the camera is close enough set an out point for the ‘huge’ map and transition to your ‘not-so-huge’ map, then transition to your ‘kinda huge’ map, etc.

Thanks, Darby. Yes, I continuously rastorize, and toggling does not seem to effect the render time.

The creation of instances is probably the solution. What I plan to do is duplicate the Illustrator file, then reduce the document size, then import it as merged layers.

    Otta work.

    thanks
