  • Digitizing DVCPRO 50 to FCP using SDX900 as VTR

I’m a newbie to FCP and I have a few stupid questions. I only picked up my edit suite to do simple editing jobs but already I’m stuck. I have a new MacPro with 16GB ram and 4TB HD/Final Cut Pro Studio 2/Kona 3 with breakout box and an AJA IO for analog.

I’m trying to use my Panasonic SDX900 as a VTR to download through my Kona 3 to Final Cut. It should work I believe. The video was recorded 24p at the highest rate 50 and 16:9. I’ve set the camera BNC output to SDI and have the audio outputting through the 5 pin XLR on the camera. I’m running this video to the SDI IN on the breakout box and the audio into the XLR 1 & 2 inputs. I have an external monitor connected to the breakout box SDI output and I’m not getting any video to either the monitor or Final Cut.

Can I not use the camera as a VTR like this ( I think that I have to set the Fianl Cut input device to : Non control device) or will the Kona only recognize an analog signal from the camera through the AJA IO? Shouldn’t I get a picture on my SDI input of my monitor when it’s connected to the output of the Breakout box? Isn’t it flow through? I can connect that same BNC cable directly to the SDI input on my monitor and get a picture.

When I’m inputting from my camera through the Kona 3 directly to Final Cut do I set Final Cut input to one of the Kona input settings (which one, at 25p and 16:9?) or Panasonic DVCPRO 50?

I apologize for asking stupid questions. Once I get video into the system I can begin my familiarization. I downloaded the Kona 3 manual but it hasn’t helped me.

You have a Kona 3 and an IO? I would think have drivers for both of those products installed simultaneously is a recipe for trouble. I could be wrong, but it might cause conflicts. Also, the audio should be able to be embedded into the SDI signal, so you shouldn’t need the XLR ins anyway.

You could probably use the camera as a VTR, but that’s a really bad idea. I’m sure you were already expecting that answer, but I’m saying it anyway. You won’t be able to recapture later without the timecode that you’d take in via RS-422 from a deck.

Does the SDX900 not have firewire? If it does that would be easier to do the pulldown removal and if you do to DVCPro50 anamorphic there is no quality lose.

Th SDX900 doesn’t have firewire out. And you can’t get Time-code out the SDI. The HDX900 does have firewire which outputs time-code.
