I was in the middle of capturing a tape using a Sony PD100 camera through firewire to my external hard drive. Right before finishing, FCP stopped the capturing because my hard drive was running out of space. I then transferred another project to a different hard drive to make some space. After that, I tried to continue capturing, but my camera would no longer read the tape. No time code, video, or sound would come up and FCP would say that the tape is not threaded, though there is a tape and FCP can see my camera and control it. On my camera, it shows a blue screen, the remaining time on the camera, and if it’s playing or not, but the display would be blue. I tried playing other tapes, resetting both my computer and camera. Apparently other people have had this problem, and one person has found a solution but can’t remember it:

I would really appreciate some help. I am hoping I won’t have to buy a new camera.

Sounds like the heads are clogged on the camcorder.

Carefully use a head cleaning tape, or just put a new blank tape in the camera and let it PLAY for 10 minutes, then try playing your recorded tape again.

FCP has this problem. the system really does think the tape is not threaded, even though it is, and its playing, and you can see it through the camera etc etc.

    try this

    save any thing thats open
    quit fcp
    shut down your computer
    shut down the camera
re connect the cable(s) between cam and computer
    start the camera
    start your computer
    open fcp

a lot of times that works for me

    hope this helps
if you do stuff in this order

Wow. Thank you. I think it worked. I didn’t think it could get that bad especially since I’ve been cleaning the camera recently because I’ve been having a lot of trouble capturing properly lately.

The problem was with my camera. It would play and show how much is left on the tape, but it wouldn’t show any other information including video, sound, and timecode. I think using a head cleaner has brought it back to the way it was beforehand. Thank you for your help~
