Audio Waveforms for aif do not display in Viewer
Hi all,
I’m running FCP 6.0.5 on a 2 x 3.2 Quad-Core Xeon and have been running into some strange audio waveform behavior in the viewer only.
AIF files imported two months ago appear correctly in the viewer (files as long as 60 min and greater), however recently imported AIFs cause major issues. Once brought into the viewer a variety of things happen: The viewer field goes entirely black with a white ghost line where the playhead once was; the initial waveform appears, but then remains frozen at that size despite zooming in and out and subsequent AIFs will load into the viewer but that frozen waveform remains (until I load a slug).
I can bring the AIFs into the timeline, but when double-clicked from there I get the same problem. The old and the new AIFs were created the exact same way (imported from CDs on iTunes straight to AIF 48). Once loaded into the viewer, they retain their markers and I can scrub and place INs and OUTs without issue. I’ve tried new projects, re-importing, fresh names, and any other combo I can think of.
I’ve since trashed my perfs and waveform cache to no avail – seen this problem posted once or twice on various message boards but without solution. Any help would be fantastic, as the problem is on my editor’s machine. Thanks for your time.

I’ve run into that very frequently here, no fun at all. One workaround I’ve found is that if you send the audio to soundtrack pro (even if you don’t do anything to it there) you’ll get the waveform back. It’s not the best workaround, but it’s helped me out.
What scares me is I frequently get the issue were I send it to soundtrack pro, all is well and good, but when I close soundtrack pro and final cut. I come back and sometimes it leaves that audio file offline, since it’s looking to be linked to a file called “render” If anybody knows what I’m doing wrong there, I’d love to know since I really like soundtrack’s setup, but if I have to risk not having the audio tomorrow, than no thank you!
That being the case, what I typically do is duplicate the audio clip, send a duplicate to soundtrack. Do what I have to do to it, then copy and paste attributes the original and we’re back on track.
