FCP Compressor – Stereo -> 5.1 surround sound for DVD
Posted by Nick Miede on February 5, 2009 at 6:21 pmI am making a DVD of a movie I just finished editing in FCP. I have a stereo audio file and want 5.1 for my DVD. I heard that this can be done very simply using FCP Compressor. Does anyone know how to do this?

The film has to be mixed with 6 discreet assigned channels of audio ( L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs). You cannot simple take a stereo mix and make it 5.1 with compressor.

February 5, 2009 at 7:14 pmI’ve never used this, but it’s free. If you have a 5.1 playback capability test it out. https://www.stevethomson.ca/vi/

February 5, 2009 at 7:22 pmCompressor needs six discrete tracks (SMPTE order) as stated by warren to create Dolby 5.1 .ac3 files.
for future projects there ae different mics you can use that will help to create dolby pro logic II and discrete 5.1 stems for dvd broadcast etc.
check out http://www.holophone.com i use the H4 SuperMini it encodes dolby surround to stereo onto my video camera then the dvd plays pro logic II surround sound its awesomehope this helps in some way

February 5, 2009 at 7:27 pmThanks, Warren. Do you know how I would proceed then with my stereo pair so I have six discreet assigned channels of audio? For instance, I assume I start by selecting 6 audio outputs in FCP (as indicated under “Fincal Cut Pro” in this link: https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/5-1_surround_sound_FCS2.html). At this point, I’m a bit unsure what to do with my grouping settings. Should A1/A2 (L,R) and A5/A6 (Ls,Rs) be left as stereo pairs on the timeline. If so, do I then convert the underlying stereo pair file to mono so I can drop on A3 (C) and A4 (LFE) and change the grouping setting to “dual mono?”

Thanks for that VST link. I mostly do sound post and I am always on the lookout for clever plugins like this one. I am doing a 5.1 remix of a doco later this month and the music files are all stereo so i will use this device and let you know if it is any good.
It also looks like the right toll to help Nick.

February 5, 2009 at 10:42 pmI’m pretty sure SoundTrack does 5.1 pretty easily too. I seem to recall you can just place the sound in whatever position you want and control the levels.

February 6, 2009 at 12:11 amWalter, STP is probably just panning. The VST plugin that John linked to does a lot of processing using Ambisonics algorithms, which is the surround encoding method used by Soundfield microphones.

What is this order exactly? Sorry I haven’t been able to find any info on this. Thanks in advance.

May 26, 2009 at 9:13 pmOK, so it would be L on track 1 and R on track 2 and so on. If that’s correct then I have been doing it correctly. I just wanted to double check. Thanks.
