I’m curious to know how compatiable the newest Avid Media Composer is with Final Cut Pro? We have a complete Avid newsroom (Newscutters, Interplay, Media Composer) at our TV station and are in the process of outfitting our production department with new editing systems. We are looking at the latest versions of Final Cut Studio and Avid Media Composer. This might sound stupid but can Final Cut Pro access and work with Avid Media Composer projects and footage? I heard that somewhere before. And if it can’t, what can we do to make this whole relationship work.

No. You can get sequences from Avid to FCP and FCP to Avid via the use of Automatic Duck and EDLs, but not media. Avid captures as MXF and OMFI, and FCP relies on Quicktime. YOu cannot pass projects and media back and forth. If you use the Duck to get a sequence over, you’ll then need to recapture that footage on whatever system you end up on.

Chose a platform and stick with it. Or use FCP only for certain tasks, like capturing footage for the graphics department or something. Or offline on Avid and then online on FCP and use the Duck to get the EDLs over. Know that you cannot use any special Avid only effects like Animatte or Paint Effects or Sapphire. You are limited to cuts and dissolves only.

Do not use both machines to creatively edit thinking that you can share projects.

I spent time in a newsroom environment that had Newscutters and InterPlay. There is no easy or logical way to tie the systems together other than converting sequences with Automatic Duck, and re-capturing.
You could also export and import QuickTime files as both platforms recognize QuickTime, but the Avid will need to convert the QuickTime to MXF. After working on an Avid Newscutter for a year and a half, I was very happy to get back into the FCP camp full time.
