  • HD clips dragged into timeline show up as unrendered

Posted by Max Green on February 4, 2009 at 4:51 pm

I just imported HD files for the first time from FireStore DTE drive. When I drop the clips into the FCP sequence, the red “undrendered” line appears. How can I get the clips into the timeline without having to render each time?

The source files are on the hard drive in quicktime format. I dragged them into the browser window. They play just fine in the viewer. When I bring them into the timeline, they appear as unrendered.

Please help!! There’s gotta be an easy way. What settings need to be changed?

Do the sequence settings match the clip settings? I bet you are bringing in a movie file of one compression and it doesn’t match your sequence, that’s why you’re rendering. It could also be a frame rate issue. Lots of things could be at issue here, check that everything matches.

Use an Easy Setup that matches the format of your footage.

If you don’t know what that is, look in the browser.

Still unrendered. I checked those settings prior to posting. Here’s what I’ve got: in the Browser the Formats of the clips have a vid rate of 29.97; Frame size 1440×1080; Compressor HDV 1080i60; Aspect HD 1440×1080. In the Easy Setup: Rate 29.97; Seq Preset HDV 1080i60.

What am I missing? Thanks for the help guys!

Are you running Final Cut Pro 6?

If so, create a New Sequence.

Drag one clip into the new Sequence.

If needed, Final Cut Pro will ask if you want the Sequence to match the Clip. Say Yes.

Now does it play in realtime?

I’m using FCP 5.1.4 – any other ideas?

“Final Cut Pro will ask if you want the Sequence to match the Clip. Say Yes.”

I tried this. FCP 5 does not ask this question.

Oh yes….it sounds crazy, but try turning off your Realtime Scopes, if you have them turned on. Your system may not be fast enough to get realtime playback with the scopes set to RT.

What are your system specs, btw? Drives and computer.

I’m running on Mac G5 2.3ghz / 5gig ram. Should be fast enough. Here’s the other catch. Scopes are not turned on.

This happened a few days ago with the first batch I imported from the DTE drive. I changed the sequence settings to match the source files ad that fixed the first render problem. But, now that I have started a new sequence using different clips from the same DTE import – the footage in the timeline is unrendered.

This is really puzzling and now 1 day behind schedule. Any ideas? Please, Please!!

    Drive specs?

    “Drive specs?”

here’s all the specs. But – this doesn’t explain why it worked with rendering in the first sequence but shows up as unrendered in the second sequence.

The source files are on a cheap Western Digital WDG1C5000N My Book Premium Edition 500 GB USB 2.0/Firewire External Hard Drive. But, this shouldn’t be why it’s unrendered. The first sequence’s footage was on the same drive.
