FCP and SONY Compatability
Posted by Dave Vander bloomen on February 3, 2009 at 5:39 pmHello-I’m new to the production side of things. I have been being warned that the HVR-Z5U Sony I am planning on purchasing may not be compatible with my FCP 6. Any suggestions? Thanks!

February 3, 2009 at 5:52 pmHDV is fully compatible with FCP. If you have a version earlier than FCP 5.1.4 then you would have issues.

June 9, 2010 at 10:55 pmHey Walter-On this note maybe you can help-this is wierd. I’ve got a Sony Z5-U camera and have been capturing HDV footage with no problem for over a year using FCP 6.0 on an older Power PC MAC tower-duel G5-running 10.4.11, out of the camera into firewire 400 with these A/V settings:
Sequence Preset: HDV-1080/60
Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: HDV Firewire
Video Playback: Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Main
Audio-DefaultNow here’s the wierd part: I’m trying to capture on my new MacBook Pro-using Snow Leopard. I’m just looping the camera into the Firewire 400 connection through my external drive, then out to the laptop through the FW800 connection. Tested a capture using IMovie to check the connection and that sees it just fine, but with the EXACT same A/V settings as on my older tower, FCP on my laptop says the device is not connected. I’ve tried every other sensible Device Control and other Preset in the menu-including the Sony HDV presets-no dice. Nothing works-This baffles the hell out of me.
Is it some device control firmware or codec issue with SnoLeopard, or am I missing something stupid? Please help. Lee
