here is my dilema.. shot all my footage in 16:9 imported as regular NTSC 48KHZ setting.. not in the NTSC anamorphic.. so now what do I do?.. I exported the whole video.. but it comes out in 4:3 .. Am i correct to say that if I shoot in 16:9 on the canvas of FCP Im supposed to see it as 16:9 with the black on top and at the bottom correct? 80% of the video is edited.. is there a quick fix..or am i screwed. thanx..
to**@*******ze.com I really shoud of read the manual before hand but just figured FCP would know what is 16:9 and what is 4:3
    thanx..

In the bin (before you place it in the timeline) scroll way to the right until in see the anamorphic column and click it for all the footage, it will now show up are anamorphic in the timeline (of course the sequence needs to be anamorphic also).

Michael is just so darned word-efficient — however, he did fail to answer one thing.

With regard to what you’ve cut already — open a new timeline, make certain to check the anamorphic box in the Sequence>>Settings. Copy and paste everything from your old timeline into the new timeline, and most important of all, highlight everything on the timeline, right click and select Remove Attributes, and check “Distort” when the selection window appears and hit OK.

OK.. great.. so I created a new timeline…set setting to anamporphic. selected all footage.. right clicked –removed attributes and selected distort… copied and pasted in the new timeline.. great..it’s now a true 16:9 much wider.. but on the canvas..is it supposed to have the black on top and black on bottom how it looks on final screen..
sorry if this question seem dumb.. but just making sure..

thanx again…OH .. by the way.. anyone know why my footage does not run smooth unless I have one video track playing at once only.. I can have a dead non-used track underneath the main one.. but it just kind of slows down a bit. . not smooth at all.. and I have a 2 X 2 ghz dual-core intel xeon with 3 gigs of ram.. from crucial… running on a seperate USB hard drive.. 7200 RMP seagete.. os 10.5.6

    thanx

    Tony,

USB drives are simply NG for video editing — they do not have the necessary sustained throughput. You can use them for backups, but they simply are not good enough for editing.

As far as your other question, if your material is anamorphic DV and your timeline settings are set properly to match, you should be viewing full-frame widescreen 16×9 without the “letterbox” on top and bottom.

Meanwhile, I have two tips for you that I hope you”ll follow…

    1. Please watch this short tutorial and follow it religiously when setting up new projects in FCP and you will never have problems again. https://library.creativecow.net/articles/biscardi_walter/realtime_sequences.php

    2. Brush up on editing terminology and learn all the terms such as anamorphic, letterbox, pillarbox, etc., etc., etc. Knowing these terms will help you considerably here on the Cow and in the real world when talking video, and you will become a professional much faster if you can talk the talk.
