Problem with importing
Posted by Melanie Bruggemans on January 26, 2009 at 1:09 pmHi guys,
I have an interesting problem. After I have captured footage and I import it, the whole file does not import. When I go to the file on my hard drive, all the footage are there, but as soon as I import it, only a part imports into Final Cut Pro. I had this problem last week also, but never before that. I am on 6.0.4.
Last time I solved the problem (kind of) by converting the file to dv. This time it does I converted it to avi and it does not solve the problem, when I convert it to dv I can see all the footage in FCP. Any advice?Melanie Bruggemans replied 17 years, 3 months ago 6 Members · 12 Replies -

January 26, 2009 at 1:30 pmThere’s no information here. Please provide exact and complete details about what the file is that you are trying to import.
It would also be helpful to know what computer you’re using? Is the file on an external drive? What drive? How is it formatted?
All the best,
Tom

What in the world does this mean? If you capture your footage, it automatically is put into your project. There’s no two step process to capturing. If you have to “import” your footage after capturing you’re doing something wrong.
And where does converting to DV and AVI come in? That makes no sense.

January 26, 2009 at 1:57 pmI am using 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel G5 with 6 GB memory. I am capturing a miniDV tape (DVcam) from a Sony HDV deck onto an external 1.5 GB Lacie. I capture PAL 16:9(Anamorphic). I then import into a PAL 16:9 project from my Lacie into my project which is saved on my internal drive.
It seems like I can only import part of my file that I captured onto my Lacie. When I open the file in Quicktime I see all the footage that I captured that was on the tape (I use the capture now function). As soon as I import the mov file into my fcp project only part of the file imports (although on my hard drive the whole tape can be seen if you scroll through the footage). For example if I capture 30 min worth of footage, only the first 10 min imports. But in Quicktime the whole 30 min is visible.
Can it be because there are time code breaks in the footage? Which does not make sense because I have never had this problem before.
When I convert the mov file to dv I can see all the footage (the whole file and not just part of it) in fcp. Thanks

January 26, 2009 at 2:06 pmOnce again, how is the drive formatted?
There is something wrong with your procedure. When you capture the material should automatically appear in the project browser. No import function is necessary. Perhaps you should explain how you are capturing as this is not the normal procedure used in FCP.
All the best,

January 26, 2009 at 2:06 pm🙂 Sorry you are correct. The file is in fcp after it has been captured, but I delete and import to see if it wont fix the problem, but even if I delete and import, I still only see a part of the footage.
Converting it to DV seems to solve the problem, but it does not seem normal to have to convert it to be able to work. Thanks

January 26, 2009 at 2:14 pmDrives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I go apple 8, play tape, capture now. Device control FireWire PAL, Capture input: DV PAL 48kHz Anamorphic. I use a FireWire 800 cable to capture from the deck. -

You’re moving the footage to your internal drive? Why? That should never be done.
[Melanie Bruggemans] “It seems like I can only import part of my file that I captured onto my Lacie”
Again, there should be zero importing. You capture to your project you edit, you do not import anything.

January 26, 2009 at 2:37 pmI am sorry, I seem to have a problem expressing myself 🙂
I will go step by step:My setup:
Project format: PAL, 25 frames. Fcp project file is saved on my internal drive (Boot drive). I use DV-PAL Anamorphic
Capture preset: DV PAL 48 kHz Anamorphic
Device Control Preset: FireWire PAL
Playback output Video: Apple FireWire PAL (720×576)
Playback output Audio Firewire Dv.Capturing:
File/log & capture (apple8)
I press play on the deck, tapes starts to play
I press capture now
Scratch disc: Lacie
I capture 38 minutes of footage from the tape
Preferences: Warn about time code breaks only after capture. After capture I click on the file that was just captured, I scroll through it in Final cut pro(my 38 min that I just captured). I scroll through and I can only view 1min and 13 sec in Final Cut.
I go to finder, search for the file on the hard drive and find the footage that was captured. It captures straight onto my Lacie. I open it in Quicktime from the Lacie and the whole 38 min is in the Quicktime file, but I can only see 1min and 13 sec in Final Cut Pro self.
I go into Final Cut Pro delete the captured file, re-import from the hard drive. I can still only see 1min 13 sec.To try and solve the problem, I go to Mpeg Streamclip and convert the file from the Lacie from mov to dv. I import the dv 38min and it works. If I leave it as the originally captured
file I can only see 1min 13 sec. If I convert it and import it from dv, I see the whole 38min.I hope this is a bit better
Thanks
Melanie
I hope this explains it a bit better. -

January 26, 2009 at 2:56 pmHave you tried turning off the external video playback? Perhaps there is a firewire bus sharing problem, so it locks up after a short period of time.
If you set external video to off under the view menu, can you play a longer portion of your clip?

January 26, 2009 at 3:11 pm……also what version of FCP are you running? May be you are using an earlier version than 5.1?
