I’ve got a problem with subtitles! The project I’m working on has subtitles for comic effect, so they have to appear whether people have close captioning turned on or off. So, I’ve rendered the text onto the project timeline.

Although they look sharp, fine, and more than readable on the computer, once I’ve created a DVD they come through on the TV unreadable, despite large text size, and a border around the text. They seem to be suffering from some form of half-life. Fuzzy, garbled, and ugly.

The final RED footage renderings are on a timeline with these settings:

    1920 x 1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9)
    23.98
    Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)

I’m using Boris to create the text, and rendering it on that timeline. Which is where it is imminently readable.

And then simply creating an MPG-2 file in compressor, using the “DVD: Best Quality” presets, and setting DVD Studio Pro to play the movie as “Pan-Scan Letterbox.”

This might be more than enough details, but since I don’t know where the problem is occurring, thought I’d throw it all out there.

    Thank you in advance!

    Hi Graham,

Have you tried setting the title positions to even scan lines in the motion tab for each title? This usually fixes issues that I haved had in the past. Let me know if you have found any other fixes. Good luck.
