  • FCP to HDCAM-SR – frame accurate?

Posted by David Jahns on January 22, 2009 at 6:18 pm

We are trying to layoff 1080psf23.98 sequences from FCP to a rented SRW-5500, using a Kona LHe, HD-SDI. The problem is that the deck control is inconsistent – sometimes it’s exactly on, sometimes it’s a frame off, sometimes even 2. We have 23.98 sync to both FCP & the deck.

The owner of the deck says, “Yeah, that’s FCP for you – not the deck’s fault” – but we’ve laid off frame accurately for years to NTSC DigiBeta. Does FCP have a problem with 23.98?

Anyone else have problems laying off accurately to HDCAM-SR at 23.98? Is this a known issue?

Is you deck control set to Sony 422 23.98? Also I tend to set my preroll to at least 6 seconds.

Have you confirmed deck is getting External HD for ref, and AJA is using external HD for ref?

Sometimes I’ve found removing your sync generator and putting the deck in Input Video Ref solves a lot of problems when time is critical.

Yes, we’ve checked the REF signals, and deck control settings. I started with the FCP’s preset for Sony 23.98. I’ve tried different frame offsets, but since it’s inconsistent, that doesn’t do much good.

I’ll try upping the pre-roll to 6 sec, and then try the Input Video Ref if necessary. Thanks.

[David Jahns] “The owner of the deck says, “Yeah, that’s FCP for you – not the deck’s fault””

what a lazy cop-out to say something like that.

if anything its the aja or black-magic card causing the rs-422 weirdness.

I don’t usually do the layback, so I don’t know the technical stuff about this. I have “my guy” do this, and he has done this successfully for me a few times. There are issues with TC slippage occasionally, but he has a method to figure this out before he lays off the entire 90 min. He might have one false start, but then he gets it right on the next time.

    HDCAM decks are complex machines.

I’ve figured out to route a downconvert with TC burn-in to my DigiBeta, crash record before the slate/countdown, then rewind to check the 2-pop to see if it’s right at 59:58:00.

It works, but it’s a pain, and I have to use both decks, etc… PLus – I just want FCP to work every time!

(The deck’s owners say they never have a problem with their Avid or Flame, so there shouldn’t be any reason FCP would be any different…)

Same situation with me. I test laying off the first 10 seconds. If it’s on, great. If not I adjust the offset and then it works fine.

Thank you all for your advice.

I seem to have a working system. For those who are curious, changing the deck’s SYNC to come from the incoming video rather than the Sync Gen seems to have done the trick.

I’ve laid off 12 spots today, each one accurately.

Thank you to the power of many….
