Hey guys Im looking to get a little better at doing some sky replacement and compositing work so I was wondering if anyone can suggest some things that I could practice on. What can I do to really make the footage I work on, really pop. Ive followed Andrew Kramers sky replacement tutorial and pretty much everything else he’s offered so far. Just looking for some good ol practice and maybe some hints/tips on how to take it to the next level. Thanks to all.

It’s hard to know what to suggest without knowing the details of a project. I suppose that’s my suggestion =) Always push yourself to come up with the best solution for the given source material, the source material will often determine how you approach your work. Also, use reference footage (even still images) constantly. If your composite doesn’t look right, ask yourself why the reference image does and yours doesn’t.

For creating mattes you can often create a hi-con matte by playing with the levels effect. If you’re willing to give up a little bit of control you can use the Keying>Extract effect which uses a histogram similar to the Levels effect to key areas of a luma range that you define.
