16 Character Reel Number EDLs from FCP
Posted by Ryan Brooks on January 13, 2009 at 4:12 pmHello,
Does anyone know of a way to produce EDLs from Final Cut Pro with 16 Character reel names/numbers?
Any help much appreciated!
Cheers,
Ryan.

January 13, 2009 at 4:30 pmI don’t know of any EDL protocol that allows that. EDL’s are for primitive 1970’s computers (linear edit controllers). It’s been awhile, but the max I have heard of is 8 characters.
Have you tried all the flavors…GVG, Sony, as well as CMX.

January 13, 2009 at 4:35 pmBoth Avid and Nucoda can import and export 16 Character reel names as CMX3600 EDLs. It would help our RED Workflow nicely if you could do this, but none of the flavours of EDLs from FCP seem to do this!
Nevermind!
Thanks.
Ryan.

out of any of the EDL formats, the CMX 3600 will give you 8 place alpha numeric reel names, but that is the biggest you will see. EDL’s just dont make a lot of room for reel names.
What usually happens is you will get substitutions, with an legend of the subs at the top of the list, ususally something like “Reel BobsBigDog1 has been replaced with 000008”
to make it less random, you could rename all the necessary reels your self to something that will get carried through, in the case of a CMX 3600 EDL, you have 8 charachters
hope this helps

January 13, 2009 at 4:58 pmI thought this might be the case! Just a thought as it would speed up the process of going Red-FCP Offline-Nucoda Grade-DS Nitris Online
Cheers,
Ryan.

January 13, 2009 at 6:32 pmSorry Ryan, you are dealing with 20 year old technology. Time to use XMLs and the newer stuff. Or know the limitations of EDLs and adjust your “tape names” (since there is NO tape with Red) accordingly.
