  • XH-A1 = log and capture unexpectedly quiting… help!

Posted by Jeffrey Venable on January 13, 2009 at 5:54 am

I have just shot an EPK for an artist in Louisville, and am now trying to import the hdv footage. I shot on a Sony FX1 and a Canon XH-A1, and am using the XH-A1 to import (it’s the only one I can use).

So, every time I open final cut pro and after I have already changed my “Easy Setup” settings to HDV1080i format and I try to open Log and Capture, Final Cut unexpectedly quits. It appears as though the system recognizes the camera as HDV1080i (as it should…) but this problem occurs EVERY TIME I try to open up log and capture! I even tried the camera in Imovie and it worked, which tells me that it is a FCP problem. I am running FCP 5, and have already tried trashing the prefs.

I have a Macbook Pro 2.53 IntelCore Duo, and I am connecting the firewire through a lacie rugged hard drive with an 800firewire.

Thanks a lot for your input and help on this.

Perhaps this camera is not on the list of acceptable devices for FCP 5? I’d go and rent the original camera. Sony and Canon gear doesn’t always play nice nice.

Canon cameras are notorious for not playing nicely when another FireWire device is connected to the same port. I’d suggest getting an express34 FireWire adapter and connect the camera that way. Or you could capture via eSata or USB. That should fix it.

I’m having the same problem but it seams to work when I use Apple intermediate codec as the capture setting. Using canon xl h1.
Have you found a solution. I think it might be FCP cause this camera works in imovie.
