  • How is your network set up?

    Hi folks
At one of our sites we are just in the process of networking 3 FCP edit suites using Xsan and wondered if anyone had any pearls of wisdom?
We produce some quite long and often heavily graded programmes which can take a lot of rendering. One thought was to set up an iMac with FCP on it which we could open a finished project, render it, then reopen it in the edit suite for playout – any coments?
We also convert all our material to Flash and will be using an inhouse script (thanks IT Dept) with Final Cut Server to do the encoding. Aparently I’m told we can drag and drop the files from the edit suite to the server and they will be automatically encoded to Flash. Is there a way we coud do this with project to render them? (yeah I thought not either!)
Any coments or thoughts about how your network is set up very gratefully received!
    Thanks

Word of caution: Not sure what iMac model you are using, but I fried an iMac G5 a year ago doing too much compressing on it. It’s not designed for that kind of heavy duty processing load and it overheated.

As for the Server script, I’m no programmer, but you could probably write a script that would open any project file that you place in X folder. Then, it’s just a matter of having that FCP set to Auto Render (after 1 minute) and you should be all set.
