unable to see video
Where do i begin?
I created 2 similar edited projects on FINAL CUT PRO 5.1.4 on a MAC.
I exported both of them because in creating the projects I almost ran out of Hard Disk space.
All exported projects seem to play well (I checked them) and so I deleted the FC project files.
Now on 1 on the projects I cannot see video. It won’t open in Quicktime or in VLC. Or back in FC Pro.
On this problematic file when I try to import back into FC I get no video only audio.
Both files working and not working are large (18GB).
When I look at the format in QT of the one that works it says DV, 720 x 480.
When I look at the format in QT of the one that DOES NOT work it says MPEG IMX 525/60.
Odd because i was almost certain I exported them the same way.
When I try to open the problematic file in VLC I get the following error message:
main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mx3n’.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video formatAgain I can hear the full soundtrack and see the full running time length.
I’ve spent quite some time trying to troubleshoot before posting here and i am getting nowhere…
I know this is some sort of codec problem but i don’t know how to resolve it. I want to be able to see the video on the bad file and then re-compress it to fit on a DVD or on my ipod.
I read something about there should be a .component file in my library/Quicktime relating to IMXCodex but there isn’t.
I have tried reinstalling FC Pro, checking Software updates ,and reinstalling QT Player 7.5.5 and no such luck.
I have also tried rebuilding permissions.
Does anyone have a suggestion of what might work or am I destined to redo a weeks worth of work?
This seems odd because the video seems “locked” in this big file–at leat that’s how I am perceiving it!

Hi Chris,
Without that component you can not play the IMX files.
Do you have IMX as exporting option?
Yust to point that I think that FC 5.1.4 probably would work better with some oldres versions of QT.

Thank you so much for responding. I obviously am sweating this one out!
I definately have IMX as an export option in my FCP. This is how i got into this mess in the 1st place.
The one i used reads as follows:
MPG IMX 8-bit NTSC 30 mb/s 48 kHz
So my questions remain as follows:
1) the IMX.component file that i seem to be missing
How do i get it?
Does it go in my root/Library/QuickTime folder?
By putting it there will I be able to see the video again in both QT and FCP?
2) Once I can see the video again, assuming I will be able to, will I then be able to successfully use Compressor to reduce the size of the file for iPod viewing? (I did this successfully with the “other” FCP project that i didn’t have trouble viewing.)
3) You kindly indicated that my version of FCP (5.1.4) and QT are not the best match. is this part of my problem? Can anyone suggest a better version of QT?

I’ve just open my old TiBook (G4/667) that still have installed FC 5.1.4
You should have the IMX component in the QT folder of your System Library.
I don’t know how you lost it. Try to pick it from other computer.
The IMF component I have is the version 1.2 and the creation date is 1/04/05
I think that when you load the component you’ll have no problem to play and process the movie.
The QT version I have with FC 5.1.4 is QT 7.1.3
They worked together great.
FC 5.1.4 I think is the most stable version I’ve been working with since I started with FC 2.5

First of all Rafael I so appreciate the kindness of your replies. The willingness of people to read posts on message boards and help others is very heartening.
I’ve head some luck. The disappearance of my imx component is a mystery to me as well, however after much searching I found a downloadable .rar file which contained a bunch of QT “advanced” .component files.
I put the applicable one in my library, restarted, and we have picture!
I was then able to use the compression program and get the sizes down.
I hope someday to have the knowledge to be able to help someone, but I have a long way to go before I am comfortable with FCP.
In this, my 1st FCP project, I struggled with an efficient working method and hard drive space while creating the project. I’m sure this is something I’ll get better with as time goes on.
Also I had a 4:3 source which now has been exported as a 16:9–I’m not sure where in the process of playing an old VHS tape and converting it to digital via EYETV, converting that EYETV file into a .mov that I used in FCP, or the final outputing that I did with your assistance did I change the aspect ratio. But I feel the minor cropping in a minor mistake…
Also I wish now it put in some chapter markers on where the commercial used to go. i discovered when authored a DVD via TOAST it was to late to introduce manual chapter marks at that point.

Hi, I’m having the same problem i.e cannot view IMX files in fcp or QT
Where did you get the imx.component from? I have searched for hours but cannot find one.

Do a google search for
quicktime.codecs.advanced.rar
and you should find the site that i downloaded the file from. I think it was rapidshare.
Once it was downloaded and converted from a .rar file I selected the imx codec, put it in the file with my other codecs (under library/QuickTime), restarted my computer and everything worked great!
