  HD format conversion

  Greetings fellow Cows.

  I need to convert an HDV 1080i sequence to a 720p Quicktime. The (broadcast) client has requested a 720p file, as that’s their broadcast standard. They’ll download the spots from an FTP site, tag them & put them on their server.

  Exporting the sequence from FCP to a DVCProHD file results in synch problems – audio is several frames out. Converting via Compressor is better, but still soft. Converting real HD test footage (not HDV) seems OK.

  Questions:
  1. Is there something about the HDV source material (that nasty long GOP business) that tends to create synch problems upon conversion?
  2. What options are available for 720p? (DVCProHD was they only available option coming from FCP…does that seem right)?

  System details: 2007 vintage MacPro, latest version FCP, part of a networked newsroom-type broadcast server-based system (Omneon playout).

  Hi Jeff,
  If your customer wanted 720p, I don’t think that he is talking about DVCProHD 720p.
  DVCProHD is 960×720 and uses HD pixels.
  I think what your customer may want is HD 720p. That is 1280 x 720 and uses Square pixels.
  You should have some ProRess 720p presets in FC.
