So, I have an opening title where various bits of the logo and text fly in from different directions. After this happens, I want a kind of 3D transform to take place and have them zoom off the screen together.

My original plan was to parent the layers together, but for some reason the 3D parameters that I adjust on the parent layer are not reflected in the umm…children layers?

Anyway, is there a way to duplicate these layers and then merge them as in photo shop? OR split the layers and merge them?

Am I doing something wrong in my parenting? Do I have bad parenting skills?!

    Any advice would be helpful.

I’d create a 3D null, and parent all the 3D layers to it. Then I’d lay out the logo “assembled”, and keyframe everything later (i.e., not at frame 0) in the timeline.
Then I’d go back to the start and drag everything offscreen (leave the null alone), so those positions are automatically keyframed.
So now the logo will animate itself and assemble.
Now I’d animate the null’s properties even later in the timeline to suit my plan.

    So:
    1. parts assemble
    2. entire unit spins around (following the null)

Did you check the Help on parenting? Try it with something very simple first, then get more complex until it works for you.

By the way, all layers have the 3D box checked, yes?

That’s a good way of doing it. I’ll use that in the future. This actually isn’t a simple “fly in” effect. The elements come in on cranes and ladders and scissor lifts and the like.

So, I can’t redo all my animation at this point.

And no, the 3D option was not checked on all the layers (woops!) I’m pretty new with AE. Unfortunately, I’m trying to finish a project while simultaneously learning the app.

That sloved the problem. Now they all behave the way they should when parented together.

    Thank you much!

All of your children layers must be set as 3D layers if you want them to transform with the 3D layer they are parented to. This should work without any issues.

Otherwise you could make a pre-comp of your entire animation and then just scale up the pre-comp to have your letters zoom out at the end.
