Export and video length
Posted by Jack Fox on January 6, 2009 at 2:10 amWhen I export a 23.98 sequence to a full quality Quicktime the length of the media changes. The length in the FCP timeline is 28:15:23, and after export it is 28:16:05. Is this a consequence of changing the 23.98 frame rate to 29.97 for NTSC Broadcast? I don’t believe I have control of this. It did not seem to be a problem when I used print to tape. The project needs to be in a form required by PBS stations.

January 6, 2009 at 2:33 amThe length is the same…it is the time code numbers that have changed.
23.98 is NON-DROP time code only…while 29.97 can be DROP FRAME timecode, and drop frame is what is required for delivery. So you need to take this into account when you are editing. You need to know the non-drop frame timing that will conform to the proper drop frame output.

January 6, 2009 at 1:06 pmSo if I need 26 minutes and 46 seconds in a finished 29.97 drop frame video, what do I need to have in the 23.98 sequence? What would the formula be?

January 6, 2009 at 11:25 pmUse a timecode calculator, like this one:
https://lfhd.blogspot.com/2008/10/timecode-calculator.html
And you can click on the link on that blog post to see how I did this WITHOUT the timecode calculator.

January 7, 2009 at 3:26 amI checking up stream of the workflow and found that the sequence is 23.98 and the Quicktime export is 23.98 as well; however, the length of the timeline is 28:15:23 and the Quicktime is 28:16:06. So it appears I have an anomaly even before it goes to captioning and conversion to 29.97 for uplink. (Where I gain 1 second and 20 frames.)

January 7, 2009 at 8:34 pmThis forum does not allow me to edit, so let me try this again. I’ve been checking up stream of the workflow and found that the sequence and the Quicktime export is 23.98; however, the length of the timeline is 28:15:23 and the Quicktime is 28:16:06. So it appears I have an anomaly even before it goes to captioning and 29.97 conversion for uplink. (Where I gain 1 second and 20 frames.)
