Mpeg2 and Time Warner
I need some Mpeg 2 info. Over the Holidays the Time Warner Cable Rep did not grab our Betacam Sp Spot master while signing up the client….. So they begged me to upload the spot to their FTP server.. and was that a fun learning curve on Xmas eve (PC-only).
They needed Mpeg2 not quicktime. Compressor outputs Mpg2 as three files (2 audio and one video) which I find out on Friday afternoon that Time Warner can not sync the 3 files or even 2. The Spot mpeg file has to be One file, both video and audio.. I exported a mpg-Imx file, which is one mpg file with both audio and video but I noticed that the size was way bigger than any other file on their server. So, are the other guys compressing the F— out of their spots or am I missing some language and know how on Mpeg2 ouput…

You want an MPEG2 Transport sream. There’s an option for this in Compressor. Try the manual and search for ‘transport stream’ and see if that will work for you.
There’s also a program stream that has multiplexed audio as well. DId they give you any specs at all?

You could also have used MPEGstreamclip to mux the audio and video files together and send that file.
TIme Warner should have sent you their specs as far as data rate and type of stream they want encoded. For this type of work we generally use Episode Pro. Episode gives you all the controls you generally need, including reording the GOP structure and precise encoding.

There is a setting in compressor for making a transport stream MPEG-2. I have found that a 15-18 mbps clip that is CBR will usually work. The bitrate is not as important as making sure it is CBR always! The audio is 48k stereo. This should work.
Post back if you find out their specs….I’m betting on a 15-20 mbps CBR MPEG-2 transport stream.

Thanks guys for the help. I found the setting in Compressor > Inspector that allows for a Mpg transport stream. The only problem is that I could not play back that file to check the quality for some reason. (FCP-5.1.4) So I used Sorenson Squeese 4.0 to do the mpeg conversion. It took seven attempts before I found a formula that looked almost as good as the FCP QT. It seems the mid tones went a tad darker too.
The magic formula I used for Squeeze Mpg2 conversion is, 1 pass CBR / data rate 3000kpbs / ntsc / 720×480 / Frame rate 29.97 / pixel Aspect Square Pixel / Progressive / I frame rate 18 frames…
Thanks for your help.. It pointed me in the right direction. Time Warner excepted it.. Total file size for 30sec tv spot with slate was 21.9mb. I hope it looks great on the clients home TV. I would have to drive 3 hours to check it out in their environment and thats not happening…
