Creating a little car crash stunt
Hey guys, im very new here and ive searched this topic and found nothing. I’m shooting a short film at the end of the month and I want to pull off a certain scene.
The scene is car A is overtaking car B. During which car A jerks his steering wheel and smacks the side of his bonnet into the car B back trunk/wheel area causing car B to slide infront of car A . Forming a T (if your still with me)
I have after fx, greenscreen, closed off road, cars, and a sweet camra.
My thinking is going to the wreckers and getting a cheap 200$ car to do in.
Your thoughts?

Seriously, I wouldn’t even remotely consider doing this without hiring a trained, professional stunt coordinator and professional drivers.

nice idea though, but if you wanna do this the “real thing” hire a pro for your driving. from your story above I’ve noticed you would like to do it another way. so yes. okey.
you can keep the car’s still (no driving) in front of a greenscreen. make some shots of scenery that moves (from out the car on a highway or something). now you have a moving background.

then ehm, use a cable/court and some things that can pull hard on these cables. attach one cable to the car’s(the car that has to slide) front. to pull it in front of the car and a second cable to the back to make it swing.(and mayby a 3e one for extra)
now your problem is to get rid of those cables on the actual film, yes, hmm, mayby color them also and key them away as you would do with your greenscreen.i strongly advice not to do those stunts by yourself as mentiont earlier.

oohwja, another thing you could do :
buy small models of your cars. then do the whole stunt in front of a litte green screen, with cables that are so thin you could almost not see them (add a filter for your color and done, or some smoke).
then make everything very realistic in AE.
iv’e seen it in Stargate SG1 in season 7, when the blow up a big piramide, that was actual a 1.3meter piramide. very nice, okey they are pro’s and do not use AE, but okey, it’s almost the same 🙂Good luck

Thanks for some tips – Obviously I wouldn’t try to perform the stunt but make it realistic enough with a smashed up car to simulate it. Possibly having smashed car break and spin then KEY in a car that breaks infront a greenscreen..?

Hmm … I think you’re at the point where you need to bring a professional onto your team who has already done this kind of a stunt in combination with greenscreen. We can only advise you so far, and you already have a number of ideas that can only be evaluated in pre-production meetings in your sepcific environment, with your specific resources. I’m talking budget, rental studios, rigging, crew, and all that. No matter what we say, they have the final say.
In other words: step away from the computer, make some phone calls, and meet some experienced people face-to-face. 🙂

Great stuff. I’ve had a look at Andrew Kramers DVD. I do not have a budget crew pros and rigs etc. But will try cheat the effect with no serious stunts – not that stupid of course!
However using blocked off road to my advantage.Car B breaks and slides – slow speed.
Lay over footage of Car A infront of G/S braking.
Impact will be made with bit of post earth quakes.. small depth of field?
