    Hi all,
I’ve just done a little green screen test in FCP and the results are far from perfect – even after following all the guidelines on how to tidy up the edges.

Is it just that FCP’s chroma keying isn’t that good- would After Effects be a better package to use?

    Thanks in advance…

    1) Yes, After Effects will be better.

    2) There are plug-ins you can buy for Final Cut that do a better job. Use google for that, I haven’t used any of them so I can’t suggest one.

    3) What format are you using? HDV and DV are going to be difficult no matter what program you’re using.

You might also want to try Motion; I’ve had pretty good results there using Primatte RT and the complimentary “cleanup” filters such as Matte Magic.

FCP is not that bad, I use it all the time. You need to add a chroma smooth filter before the Chroma Keyer (don’t use color key or green screen) and that helps. Also, do a little edge thinning and softening, which helps a lot.

Other filters are not magic, you need to know how to tweak them just like in FCP.
