    Hello out there,

does anyone know of an effect that I can add to make it look like the scene is very cold…ie, icicles on edge of screen…maybe a premade matte template? I know, kinda’ cheezy but I think it’ll work well for the project I’m working on …any tips would be greatly appreciated. THANKS..

Digieffects makes a plug-in in it’s Delirium that does a nice snow winter effect. Not exactly ice, but it might work for you.

Panopticum make a plug-in for After Effects called Ice Pattern that does what you need, I think. But it’s for After Effects, so you’d have to import your rendered footage into FCP afterwards.

Alternatively, why not frost up the screen with a Photoshop layer and a Composite mode? Google “Photoshop Brushes Ice” to get you in the right direction.

    Good luck with your project,
    Ben

Photoshop did the trick for me when I needed this. The wrinkled plastic bag filter makes convincing ice when applied to a jagged icicle-shaped transparent selection that’s perhaps also been treated with some emboss filtered random B&W noise to create frost. Use an overlay thru the random clouds filter to add variation to the frost buildups to make it more natural. Bluish tints add a frosty finish. Play with it, it’s fun and your hands never get cold.

A particleillusion snow generator over the top of this is killer.
