  • which codec to use?

If my deliverable is simply a SD DVD, what is my best way to shoot and edit? How will my Motion graphics look? BTW, we’re using the Panasonic HVX200.

Shoot 480i60i, edit in the same codec and output to DVD at 29.97 (I have already used this and look great) or

Shoot 720p24pn, downconvert to 8-bit uncompressed 24p, edit and output to 24p DVD or

Shoot 720p24pn, edit in the same codec, the using compressor, downconvert and create my MPEG 2 files without conforming to another codec (such as uncompressed)

Which of these makes the most sense? What do the pros do to create an SD DVD?

Shoot and edit in 720pn all the way through to Compressor. It will interpret the correct frame rate and give you a very nice SD widescreen DVD.

    Have a wonderful day.

24p is perfect for DVD and web usage correct? What if I want to do this same thing for another project and output for broadcast? Do I simply output my 720p24pn sequence to Compressor and set the frame rate to 29.97? Is that adding in the correct pulldown to conform to broadcast TV standard? Or should I go to 720p60? Cineman tools? I don’t have the ability to output to tape. I’d have to downconvert to an uncompressed single and send to dub house.

What is the correct process for this?

    Well,

I have a Kona card, which does a great downconvert and adds pulldown. Short of that, Cinema Tools or Compressor should do the job.

    Have a wonderful day.

Sweet. Thanks. I was going to ask if a card would do that. I have the Intensity Pro card. I’ll look into it. Thanks for your help.

I don’t think that card downconverts, but I could be wrong.

    Have a wonderful day.

I think the card does real time down convert, but I have no idea of the quality. Maybe post that question on the Blackmagic forum.
