  • Cluster Not Working…I don’t get it.

I have three G5’s. Two Dual-Core 2.5’s and one single 1.6. All have OSX 10.5, all have final cut studio (different serials) installed. I have a NAS, a Gig-E switch and all machines & the NAS connected with CAT 6. The project files, source footage and output destinations all reside on the NAS.

    My issue:

Despite several attempted configurations I can’t seem to be able to submit a batch to a cluster consisting of the two dual-cores and have it work. Most times, the status is “Waiting”. No, I have not set “copy to cluster as needed or always”. I did try it once, but didn’t seem like it was of any help.

Long story short, I’ve tried several configurations and none of them seem to function properly. What I’m hoping to receive is an answer that will tell me how to take these three machines and make them function as a network cluster for Final Cut/Compressor.

Do I need an XServe? Do I need XSan?

    Thanks in advance,

    Randy Esulto

Thanks Jerry. It just seems that this tutorial, like many others I’ve seen, focus on how to create a cluster from a multi-core machine and then render a job on that machine. What I am attempting to do is network several multi-core machines and have all the processors within each machine function as a cluster. Unfortunately, there seems to be very little information on how to accomplish this.

I think that a big part of the challenge is where the files are stored (both the source files and the temp files that compressor creates).

From what I understand, the most efficient approach is to choose a location accessible to all the machines on the network. So, I set up a NAS. However, Qmaster doesn’t allow me to specify the NAS as the cluster storage. So, I set it to it’s default value of /var/spool/qmaster.

When I submit a job to compressor and it begins to process, it seems to hang and display “waiting” for an extended period of time.
