problems importing quicktime
sorry if this is pretty basic, just learning after effects. i imported a quicktime that was made in final cut and no video appears, only white space, in AE, but it does take up space in the bin and timeline. thanx for the help.

my guess at this point is it is a codec issue… the file was encoded out of fcp with a codec that is not availble on your ae system.
are fcp and ae on different sytems? what codec did you use to encode out of fcp (dvcpro, lossless, etc)?

they are both on the same system (mac g5). to be honest, I don’t know the codec, just exported to quicktime like i usually do.

can you import the file you exported from fcp back into fcp and it looks fine? how about opening the file in quicktime, is it ok or white?

yep, it works in final cut and as a quicktime file separate from AE. Other than that, i don’t know, sorry if I’m not helping.

You could not be more wrong. Running FCP 3, and AE 6.5, and HD is not even a capablity I have nor do I desire. But, I will export as DVCPro if you think that would help.

ok, the codec shouldn’t be the problem…
how are you viewing the file in ae? are you draggin it into the project window, then dragging it onto the make comp icon (filmstrip looking button in the project window) to create a new comp, and then hitting the zero on the #keypad to preview?
if that’s your method and you are seeing white, then you may want to try a few things. quit ae. remove the ae prefs file from user home/library/preferences/adobe/after effects/version/. remove third party quicktime components from both the library/quictime and user name/quicktime folders (not the system/library/quicktime folder). you may even want to remove third party plugins from your ae plugins folder. when you open ae again, goto prefernces>previews and disable opengl. then try bringing in your file as described above.

If you want help, you need to HELP US HELP YOU. Your answers are frustratingly lacking in information or interest in your own problem. Why should we waste our time if you can’t be bothered? There, it’s been said, moving on!
Open the file in Quicktime player, go to Window>View Movie Info and tell us the exact codec used. Without this information, square one is where you’ll stay I assure you, because when files show up as white it almost always means codec problems.
But that’s only the output file, there’s still the issue of the source footage you are using in FCP. As was mentioned upstream, it is not only doubtful but near impossible that your source footage was lossless. Did you capture from a DV tape? Betacam? What capture settings were used? Give information, get help – that’s how it works.
