Raid 0 256k Block Size, Seagate 1.5tb Drives
Hi guys;
We have a G5 Dual 2.7 with the Tempo 4×4 SATA card (4 internal 4 external connectors) and we have installed the Jive 3-drive bay for the G5. We had a raid with 3 Seagate 500 gig drives and upgraded it to three of the brand new 1.5 TB drives. Striped it Raid 0 with a block size of 256k.
Immediately had issues when accessing the drive. Lots of rainbow wheel crashes when trying to view a file in FCP on the drive.
Loaded up the other three drives (the 500 gig) and the raid works perfectly.
Anyone else working with a RAID 0 with the new Seagate 1.5tb drives and having read/write issues?
Tiger, FCS2, FCP 6.0.3 QT 7.5 Aurora Pipe system.

Hi guys; Just thought I’d report that it seems to be a firmware update that will solve the freezing issue. If you have this problem you can run a firmware updater ( on a MacPro Intel only) to fix the drive.
This seems to have affected quite a few users of the 1.5 tb drive and there is a ton of chatter on the web. The firmware is less than a month old.

You must contact Seagate support. they will send you a link to a downloadable ISO disc image file. You use Disk utility to burn an ISO CD-ROM with the image. On a MacPro you restart from the disc you created and it will load DOS. It is a DOS based program that installs the new firmware. Only a MacPro can run the DOS OS (or a PC of course).

Use for 9JU138 -300 and -336 part numbers only (firmware SD15- SD19). DO NOT use on any other part number or firmware.The firmware upgrade involves burning an ISO CD and then booting it on your (Intel-based) Mac (hold Option key while rebooting). The CD has a copy of FreeDOS and the firmware updater. Tech support mentioned that I should only have one drive installed at a time while doing the update. When the update finished, you press any key to “continue” which powers down your machine. The drive needs to be power cycled for the firmware to be installed. After each power down, I inserted a different drive and rebooted into the firmware updater. I just pulled all drives out a few inches and pushed in the drive I wanted to update. It took about 2 minutes per drive to perform the firmware update.
There is no generic direct download link. The download link is built based on your certificate number. I suppose I could give it out, but it looks like it violates the terms of the download license agreement.

We had a similar issue with 750GB Seagates. We sent the drives back to our vendor and they flashed them for us. At the time that could only be done with a PC.

Seems to have solved all the issues we were having with these drives. Went from a crash every 20 minutes to no crashes at all….
