P2 DV 50 in AE
Okay, call me late but since this P2/HD conversion, life has been just a little confusing. Does anyone know if, and is so, how I can take native P2 files (.mxf) shot DV50/HD off the cards and use in AE? Also, I may have to export these clips and burn to DVD for future use as well. I have the hardware to do it, just not so sure about the software/codecs. Your help is much appreciated. Your brother in AE-Arms.

you need a p2 utility to transcode the mxf files to dvpcro50 quicktime files or use an nle that will read the p2 mxf file structure and create the dvcpro50 quicktimes (or uncompressed or lossless) from there.
i have used fcp to import from p2 (fcp has to transcode to quicktime to edit). i then just pulled the files from the fcp capture/scratch folder directly, avoiding any additional steps of exporting. avid will also read the p2 mxf file structure natively and you can export from there. i’m sure premiere can access p2s also. there are other utilities that will allow you to convert the mxf files to other formats too.

Adobe anounced that native P2/DVCPRO HD support (all video apps) and ingest (Premiere Pro) will be added after CS3 is released. If possible, this year.

i’d love to be able to bring the p2/mxf straight to ae. currently i’ve only used fcp on someone elses system to put the p2 dvcprohd files into a quicktime wrapper so i can get them into ae. it’s a little tedious the way fcp imports the p2s, and although i can log in fcp, the logging data is not maintained in ae anyway, so i have a printed log sheet to refer to.

Of course, that works today if you have FCP/FCS.
The new announced support won’t require FCP.
Even if you are Mac-based and love Final Cut, you may not have it in every production machine.
