  • HDV Preview in Log/Capture Window?

    Hi all,

    Having a strange problem.

I have a Sony HVR-A1U HDV camera. I have shot some material in HDV 1080i 60. I need to capture only some of the tape. I have all of my settings, both on the camera and in FCP to capture HDV video. I have tried all of the various options – including all the different device control options. No matter what the settings, when I enter the log/capture window I get the warning: “Unable to Initialize Capture Device. Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.”

What’s very weird though… if I use the settings for “HDV-Prores” or “HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec” (instead of just “HDV”) it works fine – it will control the camera, and capture the tape. But I only need to find about 30-60 seconds of 30 minutes of footage – capturing the whole tape is a waste of time and space.

But it doesn’t make sense that it would work fine in the transcoding modes, but not native HDV mode. I just want to log-capture a few clips! Please help!

    I’m on a mac pro 8core 3.2Ghz with 16GB ram.

    Thanks for any info.

    Maybe a good idea…

But also check to see if you iLink Set is set to DV Sp or DVCAM, if it is, set it to off.

Thanks for the suggestions – camera is set up properly, and I tried all settings just in case. I’m a bit wary of trashing my prefs because it took me a while to get this set up just so – but if that’s what I have to do I will try it…

    scott, download “final cut rescue”

it’s a little app we all use here pretty much.

in 1 click you can trash preferences.

in another you can restore settings.

so trash them then setup again, then back them up
with final cut rescue and you’ll never have to do it again!

    Have you updated QT recently?
What are your FCP, OSX and QT revisions?

I updated QT to satisfy an iTunes update to satisfy and iPhone update and then was “unable to locate the following external devices”. (It is my only MAC)
I hit continue to finish launching FCP. When in Log and Capture, I would get the same “Unable to initialize …….blah blah blah” messages when changing settings.

Mine stopped working all together. Maybe yours is half dead due to different camera or different application versions.

Jon Chappell at DigitalRebellion started assembling a compatible versions reference.

You can search “Unable to locate the following external devices” for all the other things I tried before going out to purchase FCS2. I have not installed it yet. I need to follow David’s advice and get some hard drive / version management solutions in place first.

    Good luck.

Hi everyone I’m so glad to find this site and this thread! I am experiencing the same problem and I’m trying to get going on my documentary!

I have captured about half of the 100 hours I shot and then all my effects stopped working. I updated Leopard to 10.5.5, installed FCP and got the update for 6.0.5 and now when I try to capture from my XHA1 using the HDV 108060i capture, HDV sequence, and HDV Firewire settings it gives me the error message that the camera cannot be intialized.

I was always able to used those same settings in the past.

I found that I CAN capture using the HDV – ProRes422 preset but that takes up 4x as much space and I already have 50 hours of HDV footage.

And I DO have the XH set on HDV not AUTO.

If anyone has any clue you would be a life saver!

Thank you and if anyone ever needs any help with anything just contact me!

    -Chris

I think my troubles started when upgrading QT. To capture, I suspect you need the Pro version of QT. I probably upgraded to latest revision, but dropped out of Pro in doing so. Once I loaded up FCS2, pro was restored. I am using the ProRes422 codec and capturing is working fine. I will try capturing in a different mode and let you know.
