As a post house with all the decks and edit systems we get plenty of pre-edited jobs (FCP projects) that have to be mastered out to tape from either projects or rendered mov’s.

What is one of the biggest time consuming problems we face (and the costliest to our clients) is field issues. When output monitoring on the computer screen or progressive plasma/LCD’s you are not able to see field reversals etc when mixing up the timeline. So try and invest in some outboard gear to view on an interlaced monitor. Otherwise burn a DVD and watch it on your interlaced monitor.

Sometimes it could be as simple as watching your timeline back via your camera connected to an interlaced monitor but don’t end up paying for someone else to fix what you can do yourself; especially if you are cutting costs as much as you can. And remember, the only solution to a finished mov with field errors across dissolves is to re-render as no fields which will cause possible softening in the final program.

This is an ever increased problem in PAL land where many people intermix HDV with DVcam, where HDV is upper field and DV is lower field. And on a macbook screen it will look OK but you will be in for a lot of trouble!
