SD footage looks terrible in Capture Scratch?
Can someone explain why the SD footage I have looks terrible when opened with Quicktime, directly from the Capture Scratch folder on my Mac, but looks great when on a DVD and playing on my TV? I’ve always wondered this. The footage looks absolutely terrible when opened in Quicktime just after I bring it in on a deck from a tape. Thanks.

Also, in Quicktime Player go to Window>>Show Movie Properties>>Video Track>>Visual Settings and make certain to check the “High Quality” box.
In addition, go to Quicktime Player>>Preferences and check t ebox all th eway down at the bottom that says, “Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility.”

Does this mean that if I go into Capture Scratch and do this to quicktime files that I’m currently editing in Final Cut Pro, it will make the quality better in that particular project?

No, that is not necessary to change them to High Quality.
If you truly want to see the quality of your footage, play it back and monitor it with a real video monitor, not the computer monitor.

I’m confused… Is this question about playback with the QT Player or in FCP? If it’s the QT Player then setting to High Quality is necessary.

Yeah I asked about Quicktime Player footage quality and you answered and were correct. I’m just following up on that and am wondering that if I change the Quicktime files in Capture Scratch to high quality for a project that I’m currently working on, will it make the image appear sharper?

No, it will not make them sharper in FCP. That is strictly a QT display feature.

Hi, yes it doesn’t seem to make it sharper in FCPro, you’re right.
Let me run this by you and you can tell me if I’m dreaming or not:
I exported DV PAL Anamorphic on my desktop as a FCPro quicktime file, ready to drop into iDVD. I right-clicked the file, and opened as a quicktime movie. I went to properties and checked High Quality, and the quality improved on the screen before my very eyes. I saved the changes. The DVD is now burning as I write this (an hour to go). Should I see a difference in the encode/when the DVD is burned, because I ticked high quality?

No, it will not make any difference. It’s only for viewing in QT.
