Frame rate and log and transfer etc.
I’m assuming that log and transfer automatically senses and sets the frame rate at what it was shot at, is this correct?
This weekend I transfered a bunch of cards, all of camera A came in at 23.98 and all of camera B came in at 59.94. I didn’t touch any settings between cameras. The project settings are 720p 23.98 DVC Pro HD, and all of the footage plays fine and is in sync. Also, I notice my playback settings through my Kona LH have to be set to 59.94 to play in real time, but as I said, the sequence settings are at 23.98.
I can’t get hold of the camera guy to ask about the frame rates.
Can someone explain to me how these different frame rates seem to be playing nice together?

Sounds like one camera was shooting 720p24 at 24PN, and the other camera was shooting 720p24, but at 59.94 fps…they didn’t shoot 24PN. FCP imports the footage as shot…so if it was shot 59.94 then it imports 59.94. You can see if having REMOVE PULLDOWN in the L&T preferences checked will help…but I doubt it. That really only works for 1080i 24p.
Take a 720p 59.94 clip and run it thru compressor…use the DVCPRO HD 720p24 setting. See what it looks like. You really should have all of your footage at the same frame rate.

DVCPRO HD is a 59.94 codec…even though the frame rate is 23.98. To view properly you need to use the 59.94 output. 23.98 will flicker like mad. I don’t know a pro colorist that uses that output.

As I said, my sequence settings are 23.98 and my Kona output settings are 59.94, but it plays great, no flickering at all. I’m viewing on a Sony 720p monitor.
BTW I tried the Compressor conversion like you suggested, and scrubbing through the resulting QT file looked horrible, terrible smearing of motion, but it played fine. But, the 59.94 footage looks fine in the timeline, so I think I’ll just stick with that.
