  HD: Shoot in 720p or 1080i ?

  I’m new to the HD realm – up until now our new HPX500 has been used for SD (625i).

  Will Final Cut Studio 2 mix SD and HD on the same timeline?

  If so, is 1080i a better choice sinche the rest will be 625i? Or should I stay SD “all the way”?

  (and either way – what do you suggest the day we do start go HD all the way: 720p or 1080i?)

  You didn’t say what type of programs and where they will be displayed. If you are doing broadcast delivery work, then most broadcasters specify 1080i. If your work is for the web or projection, then 720p might be better.

  There are many determining factors but it is best to shoot and post in one format obviously. In my opinion 1080i is best if you are integrating SD material which will be interlaced.

  Sorry for not giving you more info. We shoot documentaries and the final output will mostly be on DVD (SD).

  You confirm my own suspicion – I’d stay with 1080i, since the other material is 625i.

  Can one assume that material for the web is better to shoot progressive and if you are to view on TV, interlaced is the best?

  (There’ll be CRT TVs for some more years ahead, I think).
