HD1200A DVCProHD Firewire question
Is the firewire port on the HD1200A deck a true bit-for-bit conversion of the HD material on the tape?
We have footage that was shot DVCPro 720P @ 24fps and I am wondering if it would be better to capture over HDSDI to the HD-IO using ProRes(HQ) or over firewire right from the deck to the computer using DVCProHD.Correct me if I am wrong but isn’t firewire supposed to be a straight transfer from tape with no loss of quality when you are dealing with all flavors of DVCPro?

That was my understanding (that FW was highest quality for all things DVCPro).

over firewire is a bit for bit representation of the tape.
if you capture over HD-SDI as ProRes it will be a full raster file
instead of DVCPRO-HD raster file (960×720 if your in ntsc land) -
Capturing via Firewire or HD-SDI are identical when using the AJA products. When we first started out using a 1200 deck four years ago we only used Firewire. Then we switched over to HD-SDI input when we found that the quality of the image was the same, except there were times when the AJA captures actually look visibly better than Firewire. AJA has told me they do a “rounding” of the codec which can soften artifacts, especially on solid color surfaces like walls.
We continue to use HD-SDI input with both of our 1400 decks to this day.

Walter you read my mind, I was just going to ask you
that. If ingesting HD-SDI and capturing as DVCPRO-HD
was a generation down visually from just firewire capture.thanks for the answer!
