Ex1 Footage editing in FCP
We shot footage on the sony EX1. I’m trying to edit it and for some reason pans and tilts have a slight choppy image. They are not smooth. My sequence settings are
Frame size – 1920 X1080 HDTV 1080i
Pixel aspect ratio -Square
Field Dominance – Upper
Editing time base-29.97
QT Settings – XDCAM EX 1080p30
Quality – 100%I created a SD timeline with SD 720X486 settings and once rendered the video plays smoothly.
I also tried exporting several clips to compressor and DVD SP. It looks great wide screen but still has that jerkiness on pans and tilt. Any advice? Thanks.
I’m delivering the finished video to a client to play at a trade show on a Plasma Screen.

Shooting at 30p will give you that, especially if your pans are fairly fast. If you want perfectly smooth pans & tilts, try shooting at 720 60p.

In addition to Chris’ sage advice make sure you haven’t made things more difficult for yourself by trying to edit 1080i clips in a 1080p timeline which, if your described settings are accurate, you’ve attempted to do. When playing this sequence back unrendered and in real time it will certainly cause the issues you’ve described, depending on the speed of your editing system.
Regardless of whether you’re shooting in 1080i or 1080p always make sure you’ve got the EX shutter speed set to 1/60th sec. or faster to avoid frame stuttering and to keep motion blur down to acceptable levels during pans and tilts.

I don’t think you can put the shutter speed on 60 in 1080i or 1080p mode, that’s only possible in the 720p mode if I’m not mistaken

I use 1/60th sec. shutter with HQ 1080p 30 all the time, Core.

Thanks so much to both of you. So I’ve noticed that my settings were wrong. The footage was shot in 1080i60. So I’ve changed my QT settings to XDCAM EX 1080i60. I imagine that will fix the porblem. Is that true?
As far as shutter speed is concerned, I didn’t shoot the footage. But I’m talking choppy on slow pans and tilts. Is that because the canvas window is progressive while the footage is interlaced?
Any other suggestions? Thanks.
