1080i 24P and the HD 1200A
Alright, so I’m helping someone with a project where the footage is going to be shot in Panasonic HD 1080i 24P. He’s looking at buying a HD1200A deck and is wondering if that footage can be ingested over a firewire cable or if he needs an HD video card to get the footage in. The specs on the 1200A say it can transfer 1080/50i via firewire but not 24P—but isn’t it going to be interlaced video anyway?
It’s hard to imagine a way to make anything more confusing.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do they need 1080psf23.98? If so, that is only possible through HDSDI capture and not firewire capture. They can shoot 24pA and remove the advanced pulldown via firewire capture. The can shoot regular 24p and remove the 3:2 pulldown via Cinema Tools or Compressor after capture, or they can shoot regular 24p and capture/edit @ 29.97.

Thanks for your response. I guess I’m still a little confused. What I was told is that would be shot in the Panasonic setting for 1080i 24P. The final product is video so there’s no need for it ever to be truly 24 frames per second.
I guess when I’ve done this before in SDI I always just edited in 29.97 and it’s been fine. Is there an advantage to using 24pA and removing the advanced pulldown during capture? And what happens if they need to mix in any footage that wasn’t shot 24pA?

Only if you need to edit @ 23.98 and capture via firewire. if you capture via SDI, don’t shoot with advanced pulldown.

Then you need to get that conformed to 23.98.
Editing video shot at 1080i 24 (which is a 29.97 timeline) is just fine for most purposes, especially when going back to HD 29.97 tape. If you need to make PAL version or are going to edit @ 23.98 for any other reason, then shooting/prepping for a 23.98 edit is advisable, but I can’t really answer those questions for you as I don’t know anything about your project/deliverables.
