Does anybody know of a way do animate a smooth arc fly through? I have an animation where the camera starts high above a grove of trees and then swings down and then through the trees to the back of the grove. The problem is as it is now the camera moves down stops and then moves in the Z direction instead of a smooth arc down. Maybe if there is a way for me to draw a path and tell the camera to follow that?

You can’t draw a 3D path in AE. Paths are drawn on layers, and they’re flat. You have to manually animate the camera.

Short answer: use as few keyframes as possible, placing them only at points of inflection (where the curve changes from, say, trough to crest.
Shorter answer: search the COW tutorials for “camera”, or check the FAQ sticky near the top of the AE posts listing.

[Steve Roberts] “You can’t draw a 3D path in AE.”

You can’t edit masks in 3D but you can edit motion paths in 3D. Use 4 Views of your comp (Camera, Top, Left/Right and Front) and you can use the pen tool to drag out bezier curves from any keyframe. It will show you the curve your camera will follow. Make sure that you check the path in all 4 viewing windows as sometimes the bezier handles will snap to one dimension only. This can cause bezier interpolation, for example, in the Z-axis but not the X and Y axes.

Sorry, I meant “mask”, not “path”. But I did mean “draw”. 🙂
