Not a specific problem this time, just need to write down to see if others get angry over this program:

    – it is the most problematic of Apple´s programs
    – it cannot sort a batch
    – new preferences do not stick
    – destinations may give the wrong file names, e g
filename + settings when only filename is ordered
    – sometimes just stops working
    – strange interface
    – name of batch does not stick – name it again for batch monitor
    – many freezes or spontanous quits

    etc.

So, I have calmed down a bit.

Are there other programs that are better than Compressor?

besides sorting I’m not having any of those problems.

Compressor has worked great for the most part.

what version of it are you using? I have heard of certain
    issues being really problematic.

You must always be cautious of software updates of any kind.

I never update unless I’m forced to and it has saved me
    uncounted stress.

We have just about every one of your issues on my Octo Core machine. Just started out of the blue two weeks ago. Nothing we’ve done repairs it for longer than one or two compressions.

compressor has been completely weird on all our machines for about the past three months, but it’s especially bad on the Octo Core.

We’ve had good results with BitVice. Version 2.3 is fast. On our MacPro we just encoded a 30-minute SD program for a DVD in about 17 minutes. Dual-pass. Audio to ac3 was done with Compressor. BitVice doesn’t do all the various formats like Compressor.

I don’t have any of those problems, but, I also own Episode Pro, a completely different animal and like it a lot. Plus, the Telestream folks are great support.

    Have a wonderful day.

What type of encoding do you do, mostly?

I mostly encode from XDCAM EX to H.264 or to MPEG-2. When getting this outburst of frustration I was encoding to .m2t .

For what it’s worth, I really like Compressor. It does whatever I ask it to, but obviously that is not what you are experiencing.

    Have you tried a reinstall?

Perhaps it’s chocking on the long GOP format you have? You have you tried changing your rendering settings in your XDCam EX timelines to ProRes to see if that’s any better?

Compressor is a clunker. Absolutely needs a facelift. Too many windows and a clunksville window where you drop the files. Drop 15 files and have a nice wait. Why? I haven’t done anything yet!

I agree that sometimes settings don’t stick. You come back to the tab you were in before and the settings are magically what they were BEFORE you changed them.

I have no idea why anyone defends that program. Most unlike-a-Mac experience I have on a daily basis and Apple is responsible for the app! Please. Oh, and it’s Pro!

BitVice 2.3 can batch, but is Intel and Leopard only. fast clean MPEG2 encodes. And, hey, it’s written in Sweden!

I use compressor quite regularly and quite intensively (large batches with multiple compression output settings) on my octo (’08 3.2) and haven’t had a single hang-up or abnormal occurrence lately. (all current updates installed)

compressor fails for us on all manner of formats. Working along just fine and then quits working on one or all the machines we have. Doesn’t seem to be a reason. Repair Disk Permissions, run Disk Warrior and the like, nothing seems to work reliably to get it back working.

It’s definitely been the flakiest application on all our machines for the past few months. I’ve been using FCP this past week to generate the H.264 files for the clients.
