  • FCS 2 cannot open large projects made with FCP 5

    Hi all,

Just did a fresh install of Final Cut studio 2, formatting the Mac drive, installing OS X 10.4.11 and then FCS2 . It will open most of my older projects made with FCP 5 but is unable to open a couple of large projects over 1h long.
It just asks to update to the new version, asks that buggy thing about shift fields being wrong (that i ve heard to reply no) and then the spinning ball goes on for ever.

I then installed a few updates that came up with Software Update but same problem. Cleared FC user pref files as suggested, copied the project file, repaired permissions..nothing. Why is this happening?

Apart from that the spotlight has gone bananas especially the one on the finder window simply does work. I ve tried a million things to fix this from reading on the net with no luck. spot light on the finder is a vital tool for me as we have a large database of archived footage that i often search and then sort results by size which is v helpful for me.

    Any ideas?

I don’t know if this helps but it is related to the beach ball
issue you have, it’s something someone posted here a few months back:

DO NOT INSTALL 6.1.3 WITHOUT FIRST DOING A CLEAN INSTALL
OF LEOPARD, OR OLDER PROJECTS MAY NOT EVER LOAD (BEACHBALL)

    Ok,
we bought Leopard, did a new clean install (i.e. formatted system disk), updated OSX then installed FCS2 and run the online update again and we are having the same problem. When i try to open large projects (2 in particular over 1h long) i first get the message to update projects made with old version – i click yes then i get the message: “one or more sequences dont have the correct application of the shift fields filter. Would you like that to be corrected now?” – i answer no. Then it freezes while opening with the colorful beach-ball…
Trashed the preferences and tried again.. no luck

What the hell is going on?
    Anyone?

I start wonder how much “pro” FINAL cut really is…

Well we solved this. I cleared some hard disk space on the system as it had very little left and we let FCP to take its time updating the project and after 15 or so minutes it did open. It seemed like it had frozen since the progress bars were not moving but it was working.
So if anyone is having problems trying to open old projects with FCS2 it seems it needs plenty of time to do it..
