  Problems with FCP External Audio to HVR-M15U

  We have two edit stations here at work. Both are PowerMacs, 10.4.11, running Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP version 6.0.4)

  We have one miniDV/DVCam deck, a Sony HVR-M15U. We have set one Mac aside from dubbing only, and connect to the HVR-M15U via firewire (the port on the front of the machine).

  At times, and this only happens with one Mac, the audio going to the deck suddenly becomes distorted – The original audio is kind of there, but layered with a ton of white noise and distortion. It sounds like Satan himself is narrating a car commercial.

  I have tried in frustration to understand why this is happening. It’s not just our external monitor, because when we actually Print to Tape, the audio is like that on the tape. We’ve tried switching firewire cables, same thing. The only thing that works is moving the deck to our main edit computer, but I’d like to avoid that to stay away from hardware communication and organization issues.

  Is this a common problem? Does anyone have any idea of what could be happening? Should I call a priest?

  you say it works just fine on the other mac?

  check to make sure every bit of software related is the same
  version.

  Have you tried the rear firewire port?

  I had a mystery where the rear 400 port went dead for a month
  (the front still worked) then it came back to life after
  doing an smu reset (you might try that, google it)
